The Barbados Civil Aviation Department, a division of the Ministry of Tourism and International Transport, is the agency charged with ensuring the safety, efficiency and regularity of International Air Transport to this country. As a member state of The International Civil Organization (ICAO), Barbados seeks to follow and enforce the standards and recommended practices developed by this organization in the best interest of international aviation. The department is headed by the Director of Civil Aviation, who is responsible for aviation matters at the airport and indeed the island of Barbados. These include: o Air Traffic Services including equipment o Air Navigation facilities, Visual Ground Aids and Airport lighting o Aircraft registration and airworthiness o Aircraft operation and certification o The Barbados Civil Aviation Training Centre o Flight Safety and Inspections o Aircraft Accident/Incident Prevention and/or Investigation o Personnel Licensing o Aeronautical Telecommunications o Air Navigation and related regulations The Director is assisted in his duties by a number of officers who are charged with responsibilities in specific areas. These are: o Chief Air Traffic Control Officer o Technical Officer - Training and Systems o 2 Airworthiness Inspectors o Operations Officer - Aeronautical Information Services o Aerodrome and Air Traffic Services Safety Inspector o Aviation Security Inspector o Flight Operations Inspector The Director of Civil Aviation serves as an advisor to the Ministry in all matters relating to civil aviation. Not only does he influence policy decisions but is often charged with the responsibility of implementing those policies. The Director or his delegate frequently represents Barbados at International and Intra-regional fora such as meetings of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) a division of the United Nations and Eastern Caribbean Directors of Civil Aviation Meeting among numerous others.
