Prior to 1973 Air Traffic Controllers from Barbados were trained in Trinidad; however, during the late 1960's and early 1970's the increasing traffic volume was so high that it necessitated a rapid increase in ATS staff. The normally allotted two places per year at the Trinidad and Tobago ATC School were now inadequate to deal with the increased demand. As a result, in 1973 with the assistance of Transport Canada, the Government established the Barbados Civil Aviation Training Centre.
